About Millicent

Millicent Clarke, affectionately known as Millie, is an esteemed author, HR executive, leader, and advocate for diversity and inclusion with a career spanning over 37 years. Her journey is an example of the transformative power of resilience, dedication, and perseverance.

Millicent was honored in 2022 as one of the Top 100 Executives on the “INvolvepeople” and was also included in the Yahoo Finance Global Empower Role Model list. She is also an advocate for girls’ education and a shareholder at Legacy Girls College in Akuse, Ghana.

Early Life and Education

Born on May 23, 1964, in Ghana, West Africa, Millicent Clarke’s early life was shaped by her parents, Daniel William Donkor and Paulina Antwi Donkor, who instilled in her the values of hard work and perseverance. She pursued a BA Honors degree and a Diploma in Education from the University of Cape Coast in Ghana and later completed a Masters in Business Leadership from the University of South Africa. Millie also completed various leadership programs at prestigious institutions such as INSEAD, IMD, and Oxford University.

Professional Journey

Millie began her professional career as a business lecturer at a tertiary institution, where her passion for working with people and guiding young minds flourished. Her role as a guidance counselor provided her immense satisfaction. It was through this job that she discovered her passion for working with people, which led her to venture into the Human Resources field.

During her HR career, Millicent Clarke made her way to the top and held senior positions across multiple industries and continents. Building her career during the apartheid regime in South Africa, Millicent faced numerous challenges, but she never gave up. The challenges further strengthened her advocacy for diversity, equity, and inclusion.

Advocate for Education
and Empowerment

Millicent’s commitment to education and empowerment is evident in her role as a shareholder of Legacy Girls College in Akuse, Ghana, the first privately owned girls’ high school in the region. Her vision is to ensure that every girl who walks the corridors of the school leaves better equipped for the future, embodying the values of resilience, determination, and excellence.

She is also a member of the International Coaching Federation (ICF) and the Institute of Directors, South Africa (IoDSA).

Millie’s illustrious career has been adorned with numerous accolades, both local and global, which shows her commitment to excellence and making an impact. Personal Life and Interests

Outside of her professional life, Millicent is a sports enthusiast who enjoys football, athletics, and tennis. Though she admits that she is not the best at sports, she enjoys them and is not ready to give up. She has recently learned how to swim, which exemplifies her belief in continuous growth and learning. Millie is deeply influenced by her parents, who instilled in her the belief that she could achieve anything she set her mind to.

Clarke is also committed to community service and is deeply involved with Cape Town Child Welfare.

She believes that her experiences can inspire and encourage others on their career and life journeys. Her book is a bold and unapologetic exploration of leadership that blends personal anecdotes with powerful lessons on empathy, honesty, authenticity, and resilience. She wishes to leave behind a legacy that inspires the upcoming generations not to hesitate to push boundaries to reach their full potential.
